Poker hands

While there are many different forms of poker, you will still be able to play all versions if you understand the poker hands ranking and the betting rules. For the great majority of poker games, a poker hand consists of 5 cards. This list below explains the value of each hand, ranked from highest to lowest:

  • Royal Flush – This is the highest possible poker hand which consists of having an A, K, Q, J and 10, all of the same suit.
  •

  • Straight Flush – This hand consists of five cards of the same suit in sequence, such as 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 of ♣.
  •

  • Four of a Kind – Also known as Quads, this poker hand consists of four cards of equal value, for example, four ♦ or four ♠.
  •

  • Full House – This hand full of colours is made up of three cards of one value and two cards of another. For example three 6s and two 3s.
  •

  • Flush – A flush is a hand which has five cards, all of the same suit. The cards don’t need to be in sequence. An example is Q, 10, 7, 6, and 2 of ♥.
  •

  • Straight – This hand has five cards in sequence, but not all of the same suit. For example, 9♥, 8♣, 7♠, 6♦, 5♥.
  •

  • Three of a Kind – Also known as Trips, this combination contains three cards of the same rank, and the other two side cards of a different value each. To give an example, three Kings, an eight, and a two are a Three of a Kind hand.
  •

  • Two Pairs – This hand consists of two cards of equal rank, another pair of an equal rank, plus a fifth card of a different rank. For example, two Qs, two 7s, and one 4.
  •

  • One Pair – This combination contains two cards of the same value, with three extra cards of different values. An example is two 10s, 9, 4 and 2.
  •

  • High Card – This hand means that none of the five cards pair up, are of the same suit or consecutive in rank. When several players have this poker hand, the hands are rated by the highest card in each hand. Therefore, an ace-high hand beats a king-high hand, which beats a queen-high hand, and so on. If two hands contain the same high pair, the ranking of the next card higher card in hand determines who wins. For example, a hand composed with 9,9,7,2,2 beats 9,9,5,5,3
  •

  • If players have identical hands, the pot will be split between them.
